How do you respond to the question of:
“Who are you?”
Do you communicate the nuts and bolts of what you do, how old you are, married/divorced/single, where you live, and what you like to do for fun?
Or do you speak to who you are underneath the exterior? The parts within your soul, your spirit?
If someone asked me ten years ago who I was, I would have responded with answers to the first set of questions above… and if someone would have asked me who am I was in relation to my soul/spirit I would have felt a wee bit uncomfortable!
Those of you who have worked with me one on one or in groups, know I am a bit in love with a pretty cool thing called “Uncovering Your Values.” It’s an experience in discovering your own personal playbook for success personally and professionally. Trying to explain it in words doesn’t do service to it …one must experience it to feel it. (Click here for details on “The Deep Dive.”)
In a nutshell, however, our values inform our thoughts which turn into beliefs. Our beliefs really affect the way we FEEL… and the way we feel dictates our actions… which ultimately create the outcomes we see in our lives.
So when people say “I want XYZ but I can’t seem to make it happen,” I ask them to
- Look at their “Values System” and identify which values they aren’t “living.”
- Pinpoint “self-limiting beliefs” that are the reason these values are being blocked in their lives.
THE #1 REASON WE DON’T GET WHAT WE DESIRE IS SUBCONSCIOUSLY WE DON’T BELIEVE IT’S POSSIBLE OR THAT WE DESERVE IT.
When we don’t believe it’s possible or deserving, there is little chance of taking action.
Example:
If one of your values is “JOY” defined as “I experience positive experiences every day and am aligned with what I think/say/do” but deep down you believe you are unworthy of joy in your life because of things you have done in the past… then you pretty much are out of luck in the joy department. You have created meaning behind past experiences that is blocking great things for your future.
SO WHAT’S THE ANSWER?
- Uncover the “Self-Limiting Beliefs”
- Identify the meanings you’ve attached to these beliefs.
- Heal with “Self-Supporting Truths.”
Using the “JOY” example above:
- Uncover belief and identify the meaning behind it:
“I don’t deserve happiness because I have done things I am not proud of and haven’t been perfect.” - Heal it with a “Self-Supporting Truth”:
“While I’ve made mistakes, I am also a really good person on so many levels and deserving of receiving good things in my life too.”
In essence, the #1 tool to help you start living your values and taking action on what you want is shifting SELF-LIMITING BELIEFS to SELF -SUPPORTING TRUTHS.
Here’s the deal… our brains are amazing. They filter out stuff that doesn’t work for us and pretty much allow things to happen in our lives that are lined up with our dominant thoughts. So if our dominant thoughts are the “good guys” (Self-Supporting Truths) we will see movement and progress towards our goals. If our dominant thoughts are deflating and depressing (Self-Limiting Beliefs)…we won’t see inspiring possibilities in front of us and will find it very difficult to live our values (aka – have a lot of fun living!)
The new year is upon us and now is a great time for reflection. There’s a new option for working with me that is centered around this experience of uncovering your values. One intense session that people say is “like magic” and “life-changing.” Sometimes all we need is that one burst of energy and inspiration to move us in the direction we desire. Wishing you all a very safe, loving, and abundant New Year!
XO-
Meg
