Daly Gem: Frustrated At Work? Choose to Whine… Or SHINE!

As human beings, it’s in our nature to grow, to want more, to set goals, and dream. Often times, new desires present themselves in the snow globe of our professional lives.

Do we stay?
Do we go?
Do we start our own business?
Do we move to the Caribbean and teach surfing?

Sometimes, however, we are so immersed in what is WRONG with our current situation, we don’t see what is perfectly right.

For example, if you are at the point of extreme frustration due to issues with your boss, this is actually a gift. It’s a gift because it’s forcing us to confront our own “issues” with confrontation, communication, etc… and an “opportunity for growth.” Cliche, yes… but so true!

I’ve been fortunate to have wonderful bosses in my life. There was one, however, that really triggered me and my insecurities. Often times I wish I could jump back through time using the tools I now have and instead look at this situation as an opportunity to expand beyond the drama, the insecurity, and the need to be right.

20/20 hindsight is easy…but we do have a choice for today. The choices we choose with intention today are what creates new realities for our own lives, our teams, and our organizations. All it takes is getting just a bit uncomfortable. Here’s a few tips:

1. Welcome the discontent. The disruption you feel is simply an alarm clock waking you up to the desire for something different. Instead of cursing the situation, try saying “Thank you for the information!” to whomever is triggering you and begin to be more intentional about your choices, patterns, habits, and how you show up. Rather than immersing yourself in the drama of the situation, step out of it. You are bigger than this! You have work to do!
2. Choose Authenticity. Show up as your most real self which is actually your best self. Don’t hesitate to get real with yourself and others on your strengths… and your weaknesses.
3. Write Your “Life Purpose Statement.” This includes your talents, your gifts, strengths, and values. Tapping into all of these with a statement is an anchor to what you desire. Read it every morning and night. Example: “Using my gifts of communication and team building, I stay grounded in my values of authenticity and humor to easily connect with my team in a mindful and present way.”
4. Let Go. Step back and release the desire for things to be different. Accept “what is” around you with other people’s choices and behaviors and instead focus inward. Who cares if “so and so” got the promotion. Release the need to show everyone how hard you worked. Stay in your lane and repeat “It’s none of my business what others think of me” and watch how things magically happen with more ease. Ahhhhhh…..
Focusing on what is right in the situation and what you can control creates elevated energy within. At this point, you realize either “hey I love my job” or another opportunity comes knocking with ease because like attracts like and when you raise your energy you attract the same. Changing our inner experience has the potential to create radical change in our every day outside realities.
